The Vineyard
The vineyard which is planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines
was first established in 1990 with the planting of approximately
3000 Chardonnay vines. The clones planted are 8126 and Penfolds
which are two of the ultra premium clone varieties for low yielding
premium quality production.
In 2002 the second block of 3000 Pinot Noir vines was planted with
the industry recommended clones of 114, 115, MV6 and 777. The clones
are the best Bordeaux derivatives, stocks were sourced from Yallumba
where material is all DNA tested for clone purity.
The vineyard has approximately 6000 vines planted at 1.2 meter spacing’s
and 2 meter row widths covering an area of 1.3 Hectares 65% of which
is located on the land title and the remainder on a leased portion
of ground belonging to an adjacent neigh bough. The block will produce
up to 12-14 tonnes of fruit in a good year with 50% of each variety.
The Wines
At Hinton Bay, we have placed great emphasis on producing premium
quality fruit for making ultra premium wines. Everything is done
by hand in very traditional French practices from the vineyard
to the bottle, which has resulted in stunning examples of cool
climate wine production. Both the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir featured
in the medal count at the highly acclaimed Royal Hobart International
Wine Show in 2007.
Hinton Bay Chardonnay is a superb example of what cool climate
viticulture is all about. We have capitalised on the advantage of,
a warm location in the Tamar valley producing wonderful ripe melon
and citrus fruit and the long season giving vine complexity and
lingering acid for great cellaring potential. Wines are produced
by professional winemakers and aged in French oak with partial mololactic
fermentation to maximise the complexity of this sophisticated wine
style.
Hinton Bay Pinot Noir is a wonderful blend of the four most successful
cool climate Pinot Clones. The wine is “Big” and could
be described as the Coonawarra Shiraz of Pinots. Massive up front
fruit of ripe berries coupled with deep colouring and mouth filling
tannins, are complemented by 14% plus alcohol and an appropriate
use of French Oak. This wine can be comfortable consumed after two
years and will still be around in more than ten.
Hinton Bay’s unique label which won a gold medal in the Labelling
Industry awards is for sale with the property.
2008 wine stocks are currently bottled but not labelled, so any
new name could be added to this stock which would be ready for market
in 2010 (wine stocks are for sale in addition to the property contract).
